In his 35-year career, John D. Bower, M.D. dedicated his life’s work, commitment, and passion to the pursuit of quality care for patients. Through his work his accomplishments benefited thousands of people.

After his graduation from Virginia Medical College, Dr. Bower moved to Jackson Mississippi where he began his career at the University of Mississippi Medical School. After one year at his new job, Dr. Bower established an artificial kidney unit to care for End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) Patients. Viewed as a pioneer in his field, Dr. Bower helped persuade the United States Congress to include dialysis in Medicare. As soon as Congress passed this legislation, the problem of kidney treatment shifted from affordability to accessibility.

With the problems of accessibility to renal care in mind, Dr. Bower formed Kidney Care, Inc. with the goal to establish dialysis services and facilities within 30 miles of any patient's home. In its 23 years of its existence, Dr. Bower and his dedicated staff of health care providers opened up dialysis facilities in 22 different locations. In 1996, Kidney Care, Inc. merged with other dialysis programs to form the Renal Care Group and its team of health care providers continued their commitment to exceptional care for renal patients. The proceeds from this transaction were used to form the Kidney Care Foundation, later renamed the Bower Foundation.

Dr. Bower received both the Vanguard Award and the Hope Award for his extraordinary contributions to the field of medicine, the state, and to kidney patients. He is Professor Emeritus of Medicine (nephrology) in the Department of Medicine, University of Mississippi. The Bower Foundation continues its work in honor of Dr. Bower’s accomplishments.
